LONG ISLAND, N.Y. — Three urgent care centers in Long Island could be be packed with patients who are getting tested for COVID-19. The sick New Yorkers can now find out their results in just minutes.
American Family Care urgent cares in East Meadow, West Islip and Farmingdale are the first places in the nation to deliver positive test results of the coronavirus in as little as five minutes, and negative results in 13 minutes.
AFC managing director, Lou Dionisio, said, “You’re going to come in and you’re going to have the results the same day.”
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Abbott Labs’ creation. The test consists of a nasal swab.
Outside lab testing can take up to more than a week to process.
Doctors are only testing patients who are symptomatic and patients will be seen on a first come first serve basis.
AFC estimates up to 300 tests in total will be provided each day at the three locations combined.
Once a patient arrives they will wait in line to register, following a strict six-foot distance rule. After they register, they are asked to wait in their vehicle until their testing time.
After being tested their results will be sent to them in a text message.
The testing will close at each location after the first 100 people register but you can return the next day to try again.
The AFC Farmingdale location reached capacity for the day Thursday before 8:30, less than 30 minutes after opening, the managing director told PIX11.
