THE BRONX — A Bronx court officer asked how his wife was the moment he woke up from a COVID-19 coma.

Renee Cross said it was the best birthday present she every got. Her husband, 54-year-old Sgt. Darrell Cross, was in an induced coma on a ventilator in intensive care in critical condition from COVID-19

“You know he spoke today,” the relieved wife said. “He said ‘how is my wife?’ Today is my birthday. I haven’t seen him in three weeks. So a nurse named Elizabeth said ‘let’s zoom and make it happen.'”

Cross helped with rescue and recovery efforts after 9/11.

Union president Dennis Quirk said the the 1,500 officers and PIX11 viewers praying for Cross made a difference.

“Over 100 court officers are sick. This is the best news we could have. I would like to thank PIX11 for pushing for Daryl. I will never give up,” said Quirk, fighting back tears.

PIX11 will stay on his story.
