CONEY ISLAND, NEW YORK (PIX11)– It has been a long recovery for Coney Island. Nathan’s is still in its temporary spot here on the boardwalk. But now — six months after Hurricane Sandy — things are starting to go back to normal.
The first hot dog eating qualifier before the July 4th contest was held Saturday.
Also, starting Sunday, most of the famous Coney Island attractions will be open for the first time since Sandy. Many had to go through millions of dollars of repairs.
Some of the rides, like Deno’s Wonder Wheel will be free to celebrate Coney’s re-opening.
However, even with the excitement, there is a planned protest Sunday for those who are frustrated that all the rides and attractions were the first to get fixed before other things like the post office, library or community centers.
But for many families around here, they tell us it’s nice to have a little bit of fun relief.
