LONGWOOD, the Bronx — A Bronx mother was gunned down while shielding her children from a spray of bullets during a shooting at a park outside their home Saturday night.
Police found 29-year-old Jessica White with a gunshot wound to her torso. She was transported by EMS to Lincoln Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
According to New York Daily News, White was shielding her three children from bullets aimed at a group of men when she was shot.
White’s devastated mother, Gola White, witnessed her daughter’s murder — the third child she has lost to violence at the John Adams Houses in 25 years of living there, she told the Daily News.
“My daughter got up and hit the ground,” White said.
Gola White said she was sitting on a park bench next to her daughter inside the public-housing complex when the gunman suddenly entered the park and opened fire. Jessica White jumped up to protect her children from the bullets; neither the kids nor the victim’s mother were injured.
The gunman was targeting a group of men sitting nearby in the park, the victim’s mother said. Police sources tell the Daily News the shooting stemmed from a gang-related altercation.
White said she had applied several years ago for a housing transfer to escape the neighborhood violence after one of her other children, a son, was killed, but that her request still hadn’t gone through.
“If I wasn’t living here this never would have happened,” White said. “She never would’ve been here.”
