THE BRONX (PIX11) – A teacher at Lehman High School in the Bronx has been arrested for allegedly raping a 16-year-old female student.

Police said Brian Kearins, 33, was arrested shortly after midnight Wednesday. The Department of Education confirmed Kearins taught music at the high school since 2003.

“I never knew he did anything like this. It’s a little upsetting because he is a good teacher,” said graduating senior Rosemarie Martinez.

Kearins allegedly had sex with the teenage girl inside the high school as far back as fall 2012, according to police. Sources said it was inside the school.

Brian Kearins has been a music teacher at Lehman High School since 2003.

The Department of Education released a statement Wednesday.  “He has been removed from the school and reassigned away from students. We will be seeking his termination,” said Spokesperson Connie Pankratz.

The NYPD said the teen’s sister found emails between the student and the teacher. The mother contacted the school and the school called police.

No one answered the door to Kearins’ Yonkers home Wednesday afternoon.

Brian Kearins has been charged with rape, a criminal sex act and endangering the welfare of a child.
