BENSONHURST, BROOKLYN (PIX11) – Shocked pedestrians and store owners looked up Friday afternoon to see a baby lying precariously on a store awning after falling out of the 2nd floor window.

The baby, dressed only in a white, patterned shirt and diaper, was lying on top of the Tenda Tech Inc. awning outside 8015 18th Ave. when workers from a pharmacy across the street noticed and called 911 at 1:52 p.m., according to officials.

According to a witness, the baby, an 18-month-old girl, had crawled out a side window, through a vent for an air conditioning unit, onto the adjoining roof and then onto the awning.

Two people waited beneath the awning, arms at the ready, while Qing Chen, who works at the pharmacy, ran into the building.

Chen knocked on the door to the apartment above the store and, after telling the child’s mother what happened, he clambered out the same side window, onto the unstable roof and then onto the awning.  The mother had been cooking at the time and hadn’t noticed the little girl was gone.

Qing Chen said he just kept thinking about his own daughter and decided he had to do something. (PIX11/Allison Yang)

Chen, who is also a father, managed to reach the child and bring her to safety.  A family member took the young girl, who was unhurt, to Maimonides Hospital for a precautionary evaluation.
