OLIN, N.C. —Twenty-five people were taken to the hospital after a box truck struck an awning support at a North Carolina high school and caused part of the awning to fall.

Iredell-Statesville Schools spokeswoman Susie Wiberg said the students were standing under the awning on Saturday as a band competition was underway at North Iredell High School.  She said the accident occurred around 2 p.m.

Officials say a delivery truck hit a structural beam causing the awning to fall.

Twenty-one students and one adult were taken to an area hospital where three people were seriously injured.

Wiberg said the Foothills Invitational Marching Band Competition was canceled following the accident. She said the event normally attracts bands from 30 schools, but she said several schools pulled out of this year’s competition because of rainy weather.
