BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Melynni Brown has been attending the annual Trinidad Carnival for years.

It takes place in February. She and a friend booked their reservations early, back in August.

They paid a little over $4,000 to a travel agency on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn called Unique Wedding and Tours. The money was supposed to cover airfare and a week in a hotel called the Normandie in Trinidad.

But in early December, Melynni checked with the hotel and discovered they had no reservation in her or her friend’s name. Yet Melynni’s debit card had been charged by the travel agency almost  $2,800.00 for the hotel rooms.

The same thing happening with the airline tickets. She never received any tickets—but travel agency charged her for them anyway.

Caribbean Airlines said the ticket numbers on the reservation had already been used by two different people, not Melynni and her friend.

Melynni contacted Unique Wedding and Tours trying to get to the bottom of the problem.

One of the travel agents accused her of having cancelled the hotel and airfare, which Melynni says is absolutely not true.

Melynni emiled PIX11 and we went with her to the travel agency where we asked to see the proof that the rooms and airfare had been booked. They were not able to produce any proof.

Hazel Johnson, the travel agent who said she did the actual booking, said to contact the owner Kim Morrison.

PIX11 spoke with Ms. Morrison, who sent us a copy of the hotel invoice, but it was not a reservation. The Normandie said it had never received any money from the agency for Melynni or her friend.

Ms. Morrison had no explanation for the airline tickets that had already been used.

The good news is while Ms. Morrison was not in the office while we were there, she did send a messenger over with a refund check of $4,000.00 for Melynni and her friend.

There’s still no explanation for how the reservations went so terribly wrong, but at least the money has been returned, money that is earmarked for a good time at the Trinidad Carnival.
