Police officer dies after car crashes into upstate New York ravine

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Authorities say an upstate New York police officer was killed in a car accident.

The Democrat and Chronicle reports Rochester Police Officer Manuel “Manny” Ortiz died when his car crashed into a ravine in Penfield on his way to work Saturday evening.

According to Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter, witnesses saw Ortiz’s car drift and cross into oncoming lanes before going into the ravine.

Officials say the 52-year-old Ortiz was the car’s only occupant. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter says a preliminary investigation has shown the crash was “a tragic accident.”

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
