Shooting death during confrontation involving officer probed

PEMBERTON, N.J. — State authorities are investigating the shooting death of a man during a confrontation involving a New Jersey police officer.

The state attorney general’s office says a Pemberton Borough police officer responded just after 9 p.m. Friday to a reported altercation near the home of 41-year-old Witney Rivera of Pemberton Township.

Authorities said civilian witnesses reported that Rivera was armed with a long scythe when the officer arrived, and during the encounter the officer fired at Rivera.

Rivera was transported to Virtua Memorial Hospital in Mount Holly, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 10 p.m. Friday. No other injuries were reported.

The attorney general’s office said state law requires it to investigate any deaths that occur during an encounter with a law enforcement officer.
