1-month-old’s death in Bronx was a homicide: police

CLAREMONT VILLAGE, the Bronx — Authorities say the death of a baby girl at the Butler Houses in the Bronx this week was a homicide but they have not made any arrests yet.

Police responded to a 911 call on Tuesday afternoon and found 1-month-old Monreux Mercado unconscious and unresponsive inside an apartment on Webster Avenue. Sources tell PIX11 when police arrived there was a domestic dispute going on in the building in that apartment.

Sources tell PIX11 that investigators are questioning everyone, including the baby's mother, to get to the bottom of this tragedy.

Neighbors say the family had moved in a month before the baby was born.

The infant was taken to Bronx Lebanon Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police say the cause of death was blunt impact of head with skull fracture. The investigation is ongoing.
