Grandson of NJ official found dead after kidnappers demanded pot from his family

CAMDEN, N.J. — The grandson of a New Jersey official has been found dead shortly after a photo showing him blindfolded and bound was sent to his family by someone demanding 10 to 15 pounds of marijuana.

(Camden County Police Department)

Camden County officials say the body of 20-year-old Curtis Jenkins III was found in a Camden, New Jersey, home around 11 p.m. Tuesday. A cause of death has not been disclosed.

The discovery came a few hours after 32-year-old Brandon Beverly was charged with kidnapping and aggravated assault counts related to the case.

Jenkins was last seen Sunday night. County police have said his disappearance was a “calculated plot to entrap and abduct the victim.”

Jenkins’ grandfather is Camden City Council President Curtis Jenkins Sr.

Gov. Phil Murphy released a statement about Jenkins’ death:

“I am appalled by the news of the senseless murder of Curtis Jenkins III, a young man who was continuing his family’s tradition of bringing positive change to Camden. Tammy and I send our deepest condolences to the entire Jenkins family – including his grandfather, City Council President Curtis Jenkins, Sr – and everyone who knew and loved him. I encourage anyone with information into this horrible crime to contact the Camden County Police Department. And, I recommit our administration’s efforts to helping move the entire City of Camden forward.”
