At least 21 dead, 30 injured after tour bus crash in Mexico

JALAPA, Mexico — A collision between a tour bus and a semi-trailer in the Mexican state of Veracruz has left at least 21 people dead and 30 injured, officials said Wednesday.

After the crash, the bus came to rest on its side with the ground blocking its exit doors and caught fire, said Nogales township civil defense director Roberto Hernández.

State civil defense director Guadalupe Osorno said the death toll increased to 21 after one of the 31 people injured died.

The vehicles were westbound when they apparently collided in a mountainous area known as Cumbres de Maltrata. Both caught fire.

In April 2006, a bus carrying religious pilgrims ran off the highway in the same area and down a steep ravine killing 65.
