Systemwide failure causes debit/credit outage on PATH trains

JERSEY CITY — PATH riders have to buy tickets with cash Wednesday morning, thanks to a credit/debit systemwide outage for its ticket machines.

PATH says the problem will persist through the morning rush.

In a tweet sent out Tuesday night, PATH said: “We’re truly sorry for the inconvenience. Customers please BRING CASH. Still unable to process credit/debit @ vending machines or online. Auto-replenishment SmartLink not affected. Passengers can use pay-per-ride MetroCards & refill them @ MTA machines in NY. We're working on the fix.”

Rider Marc Taylor was forced to buy a Metrocard with cash because his monthly pass expired and he could not buy a new one with his credit card.

“It’s very annoying,” said Taylor. “They need to handle the problem.”

PATH has sent out more then two dozen alerts in the last two days, alerting customers to credit/debit outages.

According to tweets from PATH Alerts on Twitter, there have been systemwide outages on 10 days this month.

Port Authority has yet to respond to PIX11's request for comment.
