JERSEY CITY, N.J. — Today, we gave an $11,000 check to the lucky middle school winner of our Fuel My School Contest, the Dr. Michael Conti School in Jersey City!
The Dr. Michael Conti Middle School’s mantra is “motivating kids to make a difference in the real world.” That kind of go-get-em spirit is what got our attention when we read Dr. Yalitza Vega’s Letter, asking PIX11 to help fuel her school.
Money in the school district is drying up, according to Dr. Vega. She says that the extra funds will go towards supplies and materials that teachers need to keep their classrooms alive.
With the leftover fuel money, Principal Rivera plans to update the schools outdated science lab to a S.T.E.A.M. — a lab focused on science, technology, engineering, art and math. Rivera says that this kind of immersive focus gets students engaged by tapping into their curiosity and creative instincts.
Then from Jersey City, we drove down to Midwood, Brooklyn to meet our runner-up $5,000 prize winners.
The Middle Schoolers of P231K are part of a unique program at the DOE, which provides educational support for kids with significant challenges like autism, cognitive delays, sensory impairments, and more.
Tama Bruder, a local educator, wrote to PIX11 to share P231K’s mission. She explained that the extra fuel will push the students learning skills, social skills and make them a better child for society.
With the extra funds and school motto ‘All Children can learn,’ P231K is ready to prepare their students for a successful future.
It was a tough competition, but both the Dr. Michael Conti School and P231K@238 are winners today!
