Fordham student who died in fall to be honored with degree

NEW YORK — The Fordham University student who died after falling from the campus bell tower is to be honored with a posthumous bachelor’s degree.

Twenty-two-year-old Sydney Monfries died Sunday after she and friends were climbing up the Keating Clock tower when she slipped and fell through an opening in one of the stairway landings.

First responders found the senior at Fordham College at Rose Hill lying on the ground inside the tower at about 3 a.m.

School President Joseph McShane sent an email to students saying their “hearts go out to Sydney’s parents, family and friends.”

The university is investigating how the students gained access to the tower, which an official says is normally locked.

It’s apparently a well-known ritual for graduating seniors to the touch the bell and take photos.
