The incident started as a two-car crash on the westbound side of the freeway. After the drivers of those cars got out of their cars to assess the situation, several other cars also crashed, authorities said.

The NYPD reports there was a total of five vehicles involved. One victim died at the scene, one victim was hospitalized in critical condition, and a third victim sustained serious injuries.

Police told PIX11 the deceased victim was thrown into oncoming traffic on the other side of the highway.

The Cross Bronx Expressway is now open again, with both directions cleared, after the crash caused westbound lanes to close earlier this morning.
