Long Island man gets 27 years in prison for MS-13 killing of teen

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. — Federal prosecutors say an MS-13 gang member has been sentenced on Long Island to 27 years in prison for the 2015 slaying of a teenager he suspected was a rival gang member.

William Castellanos was sentenced on Thursday after pleading guilty last year to firearms-related murder charges in connection with the death of 16-year-old Jonathan Cardona-Hernandez.

Prosecutors say the 22-year-old Castellanos and his co-conspirators drove the victim to an area in Central Islip where they took turns shooting him with a semi-automatic handgun.

Cardona-Hernandez was struck by at least 10 bullets and was found dead on the street.

MS-13 has been blamed for a spate of killings on Long Island since 2010.
