Mother dead after fire breaks out at home in NJ

RAHWAY, N.J. — A mother died in a fire that broke out at a New Jersey home Wednesday morning, officials and family members said.

The blaze began around 6 a.m. on Washington Avenue near Rutherford Street in Rahway, according to officials.

Heavy smoke was seen coming out of the home.

Fire officials confirmed one person was pronounced dead.

The victim was Shonda Smith, a 44-year-old mother who worked at a nearby hospital's sales division, family members tell PIX11.

Family described Smith as an outgoing person who loved to travel.

Smith's mother, 20-year-old son and older brother were home when the fire broke out, and all managed to escape. They urged firefighters to rescue Smith, but she was later found dead inside a second-floor bedroom.

It is not yet known what started the fire.
