64-year-old man dead, 86-year-old man in critical condition in Queens fire

JAMAICA, Queens — A 64-year-old man is dead and an 86-year-old man is in critical condition after a Sunday fire in Jamaica, officials said.

The fire broke out at a building on 150th Street near 97th Avenue around 3 p.m., an FDNY spokesperson said. Flames burned through the building's first and second floor.

It was under control by 4 p.m.

The 64-year-old victim has been identified as David Hawkins. Eloise Woods, who lived with Hawkins and took care of him, said Hawkins was partially blind and suffered from dementia.

"I'm completely numb," she said. "I don't know what to say. I've been here for 37 years"

Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire. They are calling the blaze suspicious.

"I can't believe someone would set it on fire," Woods said.

Two dogs in the building were also killed.
