LAKE GROVE, N.Y. — Human remains found in the basement of a family home on Long Island have been identified as the family’s patriarch who disappeared half a century ago.
Suffolk County police said Wednesday the death of 57-year-old George Carroll is being classified as a homicide.
The victim’s son, Michael Carroll, says his adult sons found the remains while excavating the Lake Grove home in late October.
He says his father disappeared in 1961 when he was about 8 months old, and his late mother said he “went out and just never came back.” Police say they don’t think Carroll was ever reported missing.
Michael Carroll says he started digging up the home a few years ago, in hopes of solving the mystery.
Police say they may never determine how he died.
