Man killed on LI Expressway after stopping to check damage

MELVILLE, N.Y.  — A man heading home from a family wedding was struck and killed by a car while stopped in the middle of Long Island Expressway to check on damage after he rear-ended another vehicle.

Suffolk County police say Eric Preto was hit as he walked back to his car in the middle, eastbound lane around 12:30 a.m. Saturday in Melville.

Social media posts show the 31-year-old Selden man, his pregnant wife and their 2-year-old son had been at a wedding in Jersey City, New Jersey.

After Preto was hit, another vehicle struck his car. His wife and son, who were inside, were taken to a hospital for observation.

The driver who hit Preto was also taken to the hospital.

Three of the vehicles were heavily damaged. Part of the highway was closed for about six hours as police investigated.
