2 injured in shooting at playground near Bronx school

CONCOURSE VILLAGE, The Bronx -- Two men were rushed to the hospital after a gunman opened fire at a playground near a school in the Bronx Wednesday afternoon.

It happened just before 5 p.m. at Mott Playground between Morris and College avenues, near PS 053 Basheer Quisim.

The victims were standing in the park when an unidentified gunman approached them and began shooting, according to NYPD Bronx Investigative Chief Timothy McCormack.

"I hear three gunshots," 9-year-old Elizabeth told PIX11. "So, I was playing basketball with my brother. And then I got scared, so I ran to the building."

The 18-year-old was shot in the neck and the 20-year-old was shot in the back. Both were rushed to the hospital where they are being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Several residents, including Michael Imanuell, say the neighborhood recently took a turn for the worse after the NYPD removed one of its stationary towers from the block.

“I do have concerns for my children, other people’s kids," Imanuell said. "I think like I said before, that we should have more communication with each other. It’s our safety. I mean, things are happening out here we can’t control. But someway, somehow we have to take control back of our neighborhoods."
