NEW JERSEY— A school bus overturned on the New Jersey Turnpike while carrying dozens of children and adults, police said Saturday.

According to police, the accident happened around 5:25 p.m. in the Northbound lanes near milepost 79.9 of the New Jersey Turnpike in East Brunswick.

The school bus was returning to Newark from the 4th Annual Mayor's Family Reunion Picnic at the Black Bear Lake Country Club in Millstone, NJ, and was involved in a hit and run, according to Newark city officials.

A vehicle struck the bus causing the bus to overturn. The vehicle sped off, officials said in a Facebook post.

City officials updated the number of people injured to 33, both children and adults, all transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. At this time, there are no serious injuries or fatalities, police said.

Commuters who witnessed the scene tweeted photos which showed emergency responders and passengers aiding multiple people.

Twitter user @NaeDavy tweeted what she witnessed:

We were on the car/bus/truck northbound side on the turnpike, and suddenly the bus just flipped over one or two times from the middle lane and ended up in the left lane. Didn’t see any other vehicles involved. Everyone stopped their cars & people started running towards the bus to help. They were able to open the emergency exit in the back and also the regular door in the front. Could see injured children coming out/being taken out of the front door. It looked like a lot of the people running to help were parents of the kids.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka visited the injured riders at the hospital.
