FORESPORT, N.Y.  — Authorities say a 12-year-old central New York boy has died in a boating accident on an Adirondack lake.

State police say 45-year-old Francis Eckrich was operating his motor boat Monday on Otter Lake in the Oneida County town of Forestport, on the southwest boundary of the Adirondack Park.

Troopers say Eckrich was towing his 12-year-old son Kaden and another 12-year-old on an inflated tube when he swerved to avoid colliding with an anchored pontoon boat.

Police say both boys were thrown from the tube, with Kaden hitting the pontoon boat. Troopers say he suffered massive internal injuries and was pronounced dead at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Utica.

The other boy wasn’t injured.

The Eckrich family is from the town of Madison in neighboring Madison County.

The accident remains under investigation.
