Man bound, shot to death over PlayStation in New Jersey

HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A man has been arrested in the death of a 20-year-old who was found bound and shot multiple times on the bank of a New Jersey creek a week ago.

Rufus Thompson, 29, of Trenton, is charged with kidnapping and murdering 20-year-old Danny Diaz-Delgado, and leaving his body near Assunpink Creek in Hamilton Township with his hands tied behind his back and tape around his face.

The body of Diaz-Delgado was found face-down on March 24.

Officials said Diaz-Delgado had multiple gunshot wounds to the torso, head and leg and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Mercer County prosecutor's office said he was killed during an attempt to buy a PlayStation gaming system from Thompson. Officials say Diaz-Delgado thought he was getting a good deal after connecting with Thompson on social media.

Local newspapers reported that Diaz-Delgado was also tortured for his bank pin number before being killed.

The PlayStation was meant to be a present for his little brother.

Friends of Diaz-Delgado say this final act in life speaks to how he lived his life.

"He would tell me he'd do anything for his brother," friend Julissa Ramirez said. "He'd go far and wide just to protect his brother, his love for him and just to protect his brother, just says the type of person that he is."

A steady stream of family and friends have continued to add to a growing memorial on the banks of Assunpink Creek.

"He’s never going to be forgotten, he’s always going to be in my heart," Ramirez said. "I just want justice for Danny. I just hope there will be justice for Danny."

Neighbor Joe Mastromarino was among those who discovered the body.

"Pretty traumatic event around here," Mastromarino said. "I’ve been here 45 years and never seen anything like this."

Mastromarino says what he found in his own neighborhood rivaled some of the horrible things he witnessed while serving in Vietnam.

"So when you see something like that it definitely brings back memories," Mastromarino said.

Thompson was arrested Saturday at a friend's house by county homicide investigators and federal marshals.

Thompson is charged with murder, felony murder, robbery, kidnapping and weapons offenses. It's unclear whether he has an attorney.
