5 dead in crash on Long Island: fire officials

RIDGE, Long Island — At least five people were killed Wednesday in a crash on Long Island, according to an official with the Ridge Fire Department.

The crash happened shortly after 11:30 a.m. near Woodlot and Middle Country roads in Ridge, officials said. Four vehicles including an oil truck and a stolen car collided.

Jamel Turner, 23, was driving a stolen Camaro when he crashed into a Mazda and an oil truck. The Mazda struck an Infiniti.

A 19-year-old passenger in the Camaro was ejected from the car when they collided. Lonidell Skinner died at the scene.

The cars erupted in flames during the collision.

A man ran over and tried to open car doors to pull people out, but the fire was too strong, a witness said.

Four of those killed were in one car, officials said. A person in the stolen car was also among those killed. The driver of the oil tanker was injured and is expected to be OK.

Identifying information was not immediately available for the other four victims.

Police arrested Turner after the crash.

The road was shut down for hours after the deadly collision.
