BETHPAGE, NY — An officer who helped a drunk man home was rewarded by a punch to the face, officials said.

Police responding to a disturbance in Farmingdale on Saturday night found an intoxicated 24-year-old man, a Nassau County Police Department spokesperson said. They took Thomas Smith home to Bethpage.

Smith allegedly punched an officer in the head after exiting the vehicle.

The officer and Smith were both taken to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment.

Smith was charged with assault, officials said. He’ll be arraigned Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead.
