THORNE MIDDLE SCHOOL IN PORT MONMOUTH, NEW JERSEY
TO RECEIVE $10K FROM PIX11 FOR SCHOOL SUPPLIES
NEW YORK, N.Y.—November 13, 2017– Each year, school teachers in the US spend an average of $500 outofpocket on classroom supplies (Forbes.) PIX11, Tribune Broadcasting’s New York flagship station, is pleased to announce the middle school winner of the station’s FUEL MY SCHOOL initiative is Thorne Middle School in Port Monmouth, New Jersey.
PIX11 and Anchor Craig Treadway announced Thorne Middle School as the winning school live on the PIX11 Morning News today and presented Principal Tom Olausen with a $10,000 check to be used on school supplies or technology – the items the school cannot afford and feel would make a difference in the lives of their students.
In the submission, special education teacher, Kristyn Corace, wrote about how her school makes a difference in the lives of her students and how the prize money could help them rebuild. “We have outstanding students who volunteer to befriend our students with special needs and do special projects together. But our school is a Title I school…which means we meet the federal numbers of students in a low-income bracket. Our area was also hit very hard by Superstorm Sandy; many families are still displaced,” Kristyn wrote. “I would love to see the money go to start the school year off right by providing students with the basic necessities that we take for granted.”
The runner up middle school, Paterson School 26 in Paterson, New Jersey, will receive a $1,000 check from PIX11.
PIX11 established FUEL MY SCHOOL to help New York City public school students “fuel their school.” Elementary, middle school and high school students, teachers and parents from public schools in the 5 boros of New York City, Westchester County, Long Island and all of New Jersey were invited to submit an essay explaining how their school makes a difference. PIX11 received nearly 400 school submissions.
Next, PIX11 will be making a financial donation to help a high school achieve their academic goals through urgently needed classroom supplies.
