NEW YORK, N.Y.—November 2, 2017– Each year, school teachers in the US spend an average of $500 out-of-pocket on classroom supplies (Forbes.) PIX11, Tribune Broadcasting’s New York flagship station, is pleased to announce the elementary school winner of the station’s FUEL MY SCHOOL initiative is P.S. 96 in the Bronx.

PIX11 and Anchor Betty Nguyen announced P.S. 96 as the winning school live on the PIX11 Morning News today and presented Principal Marta Garcia a $10,000 check to be used on school supplies or technology – the items the school cannot afford and feel would make a difference in the lives of their students.

In the submission, Kim Laing-Reyes, a parent of a P.S. 96 student said, “We are a creatively-centered school and have implemented what we hoped would be an affordable music program. However, many kids cannot afford to buy or rent an instrument. If they cannot afford to do so, then they are not able to partake in the program. We don’t want them to feel like they are being punished for not having the money to get an instrument. Many of them unable to afford music instruments. We hope to continue to help to provide the kids and families in need with opportunities in their community.”

The runner up elementary school, PS 55 in the Bronx, will receive a $1,000 check from PIX11.
