Police shoot man with a knife in Hamilton Heights

HAMILTON HEIGHTS, Manhattan — Police shot an emotionally disturbed man with a knife in Hamilton Heights on Sunday evening, officials said.

He charged at the two officers responding to reports of an emotionally disturbed person with two knives, police said. An officer shot the man in the left leg.

The officer was armed with a taser, but discharged the firearm instead, police sources said. Both officers were trained in crisis intervention.

The emotionally disturbed man also appears to have stabbed himself.

One of the officers had a body camera, police sources said. The footage is being reviewed.

He was rushed to St. Luke's Hospital from 143rd Street around 5:25 p.m. He is expected to survive.

The knife-wielding man did not have any prior arrests.
