NEW YORK, May 5, 2017— PIX11, Tribune Broadcasting’s New York flagship station, honored today with three Awards for Excellence by the New York State Broadcasters Association. This year marks NYSBA’s 51st Annual Awards for Excellence in Broadcasting, which recognize the best in New York state journalism.
The following are PIX11 News’ three NYSBA awards:
BEST HARD NEWS STORY
With the Heroin epidemic growing and the death toll rising, one town in upstate New York is looking at a controversial plan to try and reduce deaths. The plan calls for a site where users could legally inject heroin under the supervision of a doctor to reduce overdoses. In “Heroin 911,” Dan Mannarino and photojournalist Ken Pelczar examine both the user and the plan – seeing if it could ever work downstate in New York City. https://pix11.com/2016/05/03/heroin-911-the-user/ https://pix11.com/2016/05/04/heroin-911-the-plan/
BEST SPOT NEWS COVERAGE
“Upset City” focused on the coverage by PIX11 News on arguably the most pivotal night in the history of American politics, Election Night 2016. PIX11 News chronicled the remarkable evening deep into the early morning hours of the next day. The honor bestowed for our coverage of that night is a testament of not only the team’s performance in front of the camera but also behind it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0IbYnA0Mfs
BEST INDIVIDUAL PUBLIC AFFAIRS PROGRAM OR SERIES
The Final Fight
The honor marks the third consecutive year the NYSBA has honored PIX11 News with an award for excellence in this category.
“The Final Fight” is a series that focused on boxing’s first black heavyweight champion, Jack Johnson, and the fight in Washington D.C. to have his wrongful conviction overturned through a posthumous presidential pardon. PIX11 News reporters Mario Diaz, Jay Dow and James Ford along with a small team of editors came together in a unique collaboration to effectively tell this story of a historic boxing champion still down for the count. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jog3xHrT7K8
