WASHINGTON — District of Columbia lawmakers will vote next week on whether to give workers in the city the nation’s most generous paid family leave benefits.
Democratic Council Chairman Phil Mendelson told colleagues Monday the bill guarantees 11 weeks of paid leave for the birth of a child, an adoption or the placement of a foster child. It provides eight weeks of leave to care for a sick relative.
The program would be funded entirely by a new payroll tax on businesses. The four states that guarantee paid family leave pay for it largely through employee contributions.
The tax would be 0.62 percent of a company’s payroll, and workers could earn a maximum of $1,000 a month while on leave.
Like all laws in the District, the proposal would require congressional approval.
