HUNTS POINT, the Bronx —An officer shot and critically wounded a 19-year-old man who police say assaulted his girlfriend at a Bronx apartment and then advanced on responding officers with a large knife.

Police were on patrol in the borough's Hunts Point section when a woman with visible injuries approached a squad car around 7:15 p.m. Wednesday and said her boyfriend assaulted her.

Officers pursued the man into a nearby apartment where he allegedly grabbed a knife with a 7-inch blade. Police used pepper spray on the man after they say he refused to drop the weapon.

After allegedly advancing on the officers, one fired a shot that struck the man in the lower back.

The suspect was treated at Lincoln Hospital and is expected to survive. It's unclear what charges the man will face.

The knife was recovered at the scene, police said.
