1 dead, 1 injured in Newark police-involved shooting

NEWARK, N.J. — One person is dead and another injured following a police-involved shooting in Newark Tuesday afternoon.

Newark police responded to a call of shots fired in the vicinity of 18th Avenue and Alexander Street around 4:30 p.m.

A law enforcement source told PIX11 News, when police arrived they saw one man was wounded and the alleged gunman ran. Police chased the suspect through the neighborhood. He was fatally shot on the scene.

Essex County Prosecutor's office said the encounter resulted in two men being shot. One man was killed and another injured. The injured man was taken to University Hospital where he is in critical but stable condition.

While the officers were not injured, two were taken to the hospital.

Law enforcement has not identified the men or police officers involved.

This is the second police-involved shooting in Newark in recent months.

Two men were killed in September when police were attempting to arrest three people in connection with several robberies.
