BROWNSVILLE, Brooklyn — A person was fatally shot by police after allegedly striking two officers in the head with a metal baton in a Brownsville apartment building Saturday afternoon.

Police responded to a 911 call of a suspicious man in the hallway at the Van Dyke Houses on Sutter Avenue about 1:10 p.m., police said.

Two officers, a man and a woman, found the man on the ninth floor of the building and got into a "scuffle." An officer removed his metal ASP baton — a telescoping police object used as a defense weapon — from his side, but the man was able to grab it from him.

The man struck both officers with the baton several times in the head, police said.

The officers then fired shots at the person, striking him. The person was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The identity of the man has not been released.

The male officer suffered a 2-inch gash on his forehead. The female officers suffered contusions.

Both officers were taken to Jamaica hospital are listed in stable condition, according to police.
