BROOKLYN. N.Y. – Police have arrested a Connecticut father who allegedly abandoned his 5-year-old daughter inside the Port Authority bus terminal and who is wanted for questioning in the slaying of the girl’s mother.

Elmer Gomez Ruono, 32, was taken into custody Friday at a shelter in Brooklyn, police said.

Ruono has been wanted since Monday morning when his daughter was found, alone, at the Manhattan bus terminal. Passersby saw the child by herself and alerted police.

The Stamford Advocate reports the girl told officers she traveled to the city with her father by bus. When the pair arrived at the Port Authority, Ruono left her, telling her to wait for him, but he never returned, authorities said.

After speaking with the girl, police went to her family’s home on Courtland Avenue in Stamford, Conn., where officers discovered her mother’s body which showed signs of a struggle. The cause of death has not been revealed.

Ruono is wanted for questioning in the death of the child’s mother.
