School bus driver killed after fiery head-on collision with van in Colts Neck, NJ

COLTS NECK, N.Y. -- A school bus driver has died after a fiery head-on collision with a mini van on Phalanx Road in the Colts Neck area of New Jersey Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office, a 2004 Dodge Durango traveling eastbound on Phalanx Road in Colts Neck collided with a 16-passenger school bus, owned by Helfrich & Sons of Keansburg, around 2:26 p.m., causing the bus to become fully engulf in flames.

The bus driver, a school bus aide and one student were on board the bus at the time of the collision.

The victims were transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune Township where the driver was pronounced dead.

The others sustained non life-threatening injuries.

The identity of the driver is being withheld at this time pending notification of next of kin.

In addition to the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, the Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team (SCART) responded to the scene to conduct the investigation with assistance from the Colts Neck, Middletown and Brookdale Police Departments.
