Woman, 68, fatally struck by flatbed truck on 42nd Street in midtown

MIDTOWN, Manhattan — A 68-year-old woman was decapitated when she was fatally struck by a flatbed truck in midtown Monday evening, police said.

The NYPD said it happened around 8 p.m. on 42nd Street between Madison and Fifth Avenues in midtown.

Officers upon arrival found a woman, 68, unconscious and unresponsive with injuries to her head. Witnesses tell PIX11 the woman had just left McDonald’s with her sister and was crossing 42nd Street against traffic when she was hit.

EMS pronounced the woman dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation found a flatbed truck, driven by a 42-year-old man, was traveling westbound on 42nd Street in the left travel lane, between Madison Avenue and Fifth Avenue, when he struck the woman who was crossing 42nd Street, mid-block, from north to south and outside of a marked crosswalk, police said.

The driver of the truck remained on the scene.

There are no arrests and the investigation is ongoing.
