Man accused of fatally punching 64-year-old man in Queens arrested

BRIARWOOD, Queens – A man has been arrested in a Queens sucker punch that resulted in the death of a 64-year-old man back in June.

Matthew Smith, 42, has been charged with criminally negligent homicide and assault with intent to cause physical injury.

Surveillance video released by the NYPD Wednesday showed a man -- later identified as Smith, approaching Patrick Gorman, 64, on the southeast corner of Main Street and Queens Boulevard on June 26 around midnight when he struck him in the head with a closed fist, causing the him to fall to the ground.

Smith and a woman, later identified as 39-year-old Elena Makarova, were seen calmly walking away as the victim in background clutched his head in pain, the footage showed.

EMS responded to the scene and took Gorman to a local hospital before he was pronounced dead, police said.

Makarova, who walked behind the culprit and ignored the incident, has short hair. She was last seen with a white T-shirt, blue jeans and sandals.

She has not yet been apprehended.

The medical examiner has not yet ruled the cause of Gorman's death.
