Just when you thought the country couldn't be more divided, the nation's sweet tooth has further alienated the populace.

With Halloween around the corner,, a product review and discovery site, set out to learn what are America's favorite trick-or-treat candies.

Its survey of more than 40,000 people found candy lovers are split when it comes to sweets.

"We gave people a choice of 35 candies and that was based off on the hundreds and thousands of product reviews we have," Elizabeth Scherle, co-founder and president of Influenster, told PIX11 News. "We ran a survey where people voted so it was like the election basically."

SweeTARTS reigned supreme in New York, while Sour Patch Kids claimed New Jersey.

Nationwide Reese's Peanut Butter Cups was one of just three candies to be voted as one of the top treats by every U.S. state. The others? Kit-Kats and Butterfingers.

As for the Halloween candy that topped the most states, it's the "polarizing" candy corn.

"I think its kinda like a love-hate candy but it won 5 states, so obviously there are closeted candy corn lovers out there," Scherle said.

Five states -- Oregon, Wyoming, Tennessee, Texas and South Carolina -- said the triangular kernels are the best.
