HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — At least 23 people were arrested near the Hofstra University campus Monday night ahead of the first presidential debate.

Nassau Count Det. Lt. Richard LeBrun said 23 people were charged with disorderly conduct and obstructing government administration around 6:50 p.m., as reported by Newsday.

About 10 minutes earlier, one person was arrested for trying to climb over a barricade in the middle of the roadway, LeBrun told Newsday.

It is not immediately clear if anyone was injured.

The arrests happened near the area designated for protestors on the south side of the Hempstead Bethpage Turnpike along the campus.
