Off-duty officer fatally shoots attempted robber in Queens, police say

JAMAICA, Queens — An off-duty officer fatally shot a would-be robber in Queens Sunday evening, police say.

The shooting happened in the area of Liberty Avenue and Merrick Boulevard in Jamaica around 8:30 p.m.

Police sources the 50-year-old officer, who works at State Supreme Court on Staten Island, was working off-duty for Allied Security when the gunman approached him.

The individual allegedly pulled out a gun and demanded the officer give him his gun and money.

The officer then shot the man.

The man was taken to Queens General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The identities of the officer and the suspect have not been released at this time.
