THE BRONX -- A woman has been arrested after she allegedly snatched a purse from an 86-year-old woman who was sitting in a wheelchair outside her Bronx home Sunday afternoon.
Adrianne Terry, 37, of the Bronx, was taken into police custody Tuesday and has been charged with grand larceny and petit larceny.
Terry allegedly grabbed Bernice Starnes' purse while she sat outside her home on Marmion Avenue Sunday afternoon, police said.
Starnes, who said she enjoys being outside and saying good morning to those who pass, told PIX11 about her ordeal.
"She came up to me and I said good morning," Starnes recalled. "She said, 'oh it is a good morning,' then grabbed my pocketbook and started to run."
Starnes, a former high school track star, tried to push herself out of her wheelchair to chase the woman, but became too exhausted and had to sit back down.
She broke out into tears explaining how she felt so helpless in the situation, because of her age.
"I couldn't catch her," Starnes said. "I wanted to catch her and beat the sh*t out of her."
The purse contained money and a bank card. Surveillance video purportedly shows Terry snatching it away from Starnes.
On Monday, officers pooled their own money together and donated it to Starnes, who was reduced to tears.
