Woman fatally struck by vehicle during police chase in Newark; driver charged

NEWARK, N.J. -- A woman who was struck and killed by a car in Newark early Friday has been identified and the driver has been charged.

The crash happened in the 400 block of University Avenue around 2:30 a.m. as a result of a police pursuit.

The pedestrian, identified as 24-year-old Chynna E. Willis of East Orange was struck and killed by a Dodge Charger being driven by 45-year-old Ken Gunther of Newark.

Officials say Gunther was being pursued by Newark Police at the time of the crash when his truck jumped the curb and slammed into Willis.

Willis was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gunther sustained minor injuries and was treated and released from University Hospital. He has been charged with one count of eluding and one count of resisting arrest.
