Panicked shoppers began running and screaming inside the Staten Island Mall on Richmond Avenue around 5:15 p.m. when loud bangs were heard, caused by fireworks being set off in the food court. Some believed there was a shooting inside the mall, a shopper told PIX11 News.

When police arrived on the scene, they found people running out of the mall and into the streets. Several people received minor injuries when they were caught in the chaos and panic.

The mall was evacuated. By 5:40 p.m., employees were allowed back in the building. The mall was then reopened shortly after.

Police are looking for two teens, caught on surveillance video walking towards the food court, wanted for questioning regarding the incident.
