SUFFOLK COUNTY, Long Island — A 69-year-old man died while competing in a Long Island triathlon Sunday, police said.

Vincent Fleck, a Westchester County man, was in the middle of the 500-meter swim portion of the Smith Point Sprint Triathlon in Narrow Bay when a lifeguard noticed he was in distress, police said. The swim was the first portion of the event.

A lifeguard took Fleck by canoe to a fire department rescue boat around 7:25 a.m., police said. An EMT began emergency first aid and Fleck was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said. A medical examiner will perform an autopsy to determine cause of death.

“We may not have known Vincent, but we admired his will to compete at 69 years old and we wished he was traveling alongside us,” said triathlon competitor and Suffolk County Executive Steven Ballone in a post on Facebook.
