ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — McDonald’s all-you-can-eat french fries is finally a reality in Missouri.

Dubbed the “McDonald’s of the Future,” the 6,500-square-foot restaurant opened Thursday in St. Joseph with 100 employees and a crowd of hungry diners.

The location, which was first announced in April, isn’t like most McDonald’s in the U.S.

Customers order their food at kiosks and have the option to customize their sandwiches and burgers with items such as guacamole and maple bacon, according to the Kansas City Star. To end the meal on a sweet note, there’s a dessert bar with a plethora of ice cream, toppings and cones to choose from.

And let’s not forget the most anticipated menu item: All-you-can-eat french fries.

“Your fries will come out in this really cute basket and it’s just like if you’re at a Mexican restaurant with chips and salsa,” said Chris Habiger, franchise owner.

The unlimited fries option will be around for the first few months. It’s unclear if it will be a permanent menu item at the location.

The lines to get a taste of the new McDonald’s also seemed endless. So many people flocked to the restaurant on opening day that it had to stop taking orders at about 1:30 p.m., the Kansas City Star reported.

Diners shouldn’t worry though — the restaurant closes at midnight, but the drive-thru window is open 24 hours.

Children were also able to take advantage of the interactive play place that included tabletop video games, light board games and a digital play — also a futuristic addition customers are enjoying.

“We have one of the newest play sets. We have a little toddler area so they can go back in there play and not be run over by the kids. (There’s) a pogo stick that you can jump up and down on and it keeps your score on it,” said Vickie Wallace director of operations.

“I’m an entrepreneur and it’s about being creative and taking risks,” Chris Habiger told the Kansas City Star.

“The demand has been like off the charts and we are doing the best we can to take care of our customers as quickly as possible. But it has been outstanding how many people are as excited about the McDonald’s of the Future as we are.”

There hasn’t been reports of the unlimited french fries menu item expanding to locations nationwide — but McDonald’s fry lovers are crossing their fingers.
