Eli “paperboy” Reed’s soulful voice echoes that of a gospel great but his appearance can be deceiving.

Born to a Boston area Jewish family, Reed grew up surrounded by music. The Brooklyn resident says he’s welcomed the fact that people may be drawn into his sound being different from his look.

For the past three years he has instructed a quartet for the Mama Foundation for the Arts Gospel for Teens program. The quartet will provide a free performance at Hearst Plaza at Lincoln Center Friday, July 29th at 7 p.m.

They will be the opening act for Eli “Paperboy Reed” and his band. For more information, log onto
