UPDATE: The mother has been released from the hospital, police said.

PLAINFIELD, N.J. — A 3-year-old child has died and a mother is in serious condition after they were struck by a car in Plainfield Wednesday morning.

The mother and child were crossing the street at the intersection of Park Avenue and West Second Street around 9 a.m. when a car struck them, police said.

They were taken to the hospital where the child died from injuries sustained from the crash.

The mother remains in critical condition.

The driver of the car was not injured and remained at the scene after the crash.

The driver has not been charged as officials continue to investigate the incident.
